Welcome back to a new appointment with Musical Disclosure. This week is dedicated to one of the most successful bands of the '70s and the main architect of elevating pop music to a model of unmatched elegance and sophistication: Fleetwood Mac.
The band was founded in 1967 by singer and guitarist Peter Green, who came into contact with drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie (the two members from whom Fleetwood Mac would take their name) while playing for a period in the blues group Bluesbreakers. Soon, guitarist Jeremy Spencer joined them, and they recorded their first three albums: "Fleetwood Mac" (1968), "Mr. Wonderful" (1968), and "Then Play On" (1969). In this last blues-rock project, members also included Danny Kirwan (second voice and second guitar) and Christine Perfect (keyboards), who, after marrying bassist John McVie, would take his surname. Peter Green, feeling misunderstood by his fellow musicians, decided to pursue a solo career, leaving the group in a transitional phase that would last until 1975, with the entry of the duo Lindsey Buckingham - Stevie Nicks. Finding themselves without a leader after Bob Welch's departure, Mick Fleetwood met Buckingham after hearing a track from his album "Buckingham Nicks" and was impressed. Seeing in him the opportunity to redeem the band, he proposed that Buckingham join, and Buckingham agreed on the condition of bringing his partner Nicks along. Thus, the new formation of the band was outlined: Lindsey Buckingham, the McVie couple, Mick Fleetwood, and Stevie Nicks. The new era was inaugurated in 1975 with the album "Fleetwood Mac," a completely new chapter compared to Peter Green's "Fleetwood Mac." Recorded in just three months from the arrival of Buckingham and Nicks, the album reached the number one position on the Billboard 200. Among the chosen singles were "Over My Head," "Warm Ways," and "Say You Love Me," written by Christine McVie, and "Rhiannon," signed by Stevie Nicks. The latter, inspired by the legend of a Welsh witch, is perhaps the song that most embodies the renewed spirit of Fleetwood Mac, with seductive melodies and refined harmonies, as well as "Landslide," which immediately captures attention with its arpeggiated harmonic turn and Nicks' melancholic voice.
We invite you today to listen to “Rhiannon”!
