Musical Disclosure by Perform School of Music Episode 123

Third appointment of the week dedicated to Porcupine Tree.

Last appointment dedicated to Porcupine Tree.

In 2002, Porcupine Tree released their seventh album, "In Absentia": this record marks a turn towards progressive metal. Although not a concept album, many tracks deal with similar themes, such as lost childhood innocence and critiques of the modern world. The album was a commercial success, selling 100,000 copies in its first year. In March 2005, Porcupine Tree released "Deadwing", an album based on a script written by Steven Wilson and Mike Bennion, telling a ghost story. The album features collaborations with Adrian Belew of King Crimson and Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth. Two singles, "Shallow" and "Lazarus," were released from the album, along with videos for three tracks. This was followed by a significant tour, culminating in the recording of the band's first video album, "Arriving Somewhere…", filmed in Chicago and directed by Danish director Lasse Hoile. In 2007, after signing with Roadrunner Records, the band worked on their ninth album, "Fear of a Blank Planet." The lyrics, inspired by Bret Easton Ellis' novel Lunar Park, address youth behavioral disorders and the negative influences of mass media. The album includes collaborations with Alex Lifeson of Rush and Robert Fripp. On September 14, 2009, Porcupine Tree released their tenth studio album, "The Incident." This double CD includes a 14-act suite and four standalone tracks unrelated to the main theme. In 2021, the band announced their reunion after an eleven-year hiatus, presenting the single "Harridan" as a preview of the album "Closure/Continuation," released on June 24, 2022.

Today's listening, taken from "In Absentia," is "The Creator Had A Mastertape."
