Third and final appointment of the week dedicated to Pino Daniele.
Influences from North African musical traditions became predominant in his next album of original songs, "Medina," released by BMG-Ricordi in February 2001. This work features international artists such as the Malian Salif Keïta, Franco-Algerian Faudel, Turkish Omar Farouk Tekbilek, Tunisian Lotfi Bushnaq, and 99 Posse (featured in the song "Evviva o rre"). Notable tracks include Via Medina, Mareluna, Lacrime di sale, and Senza 'e te, entirely written in Neapolitan. In the summer of the following year, Pino Daniele conceived the idea of a shared tour with Fiorella Mannoia, Francesco De Gregori, and Ron, later immortalized in the CD and DVD "In tour," released through Blue Drag, an independent record label created by the Neapolitan musician along with his son. With the 2004 album "Passi d'autore," the singer-songwriter moved away from Mediterranean sounds towards other styles. The experimental work benefited from the presence of the Peter Erskine Trio, essential for giving a jazz coloration to several tracks, alternating with compositions with a baroque flavor, in a framework of rediscovery by Pino Daniele of 16th-century madrigals. In October 2005, he presented the single "It's Now or Never" (a famous English cover of "'O sole mio," originally launched by Elvis Presley), to introduce the album "Iguana cafè," which the artist had announced several months earlier as the second chapter of the 2004 project. The album features, among others, percussionists Naná Vasconcelos and Karl Potter. Two years after his last work, the Neapolitan musician released "Il mio nome è Pino Daniele e vivo qui." Characterized by the encounter between Neapolitan tradition and Latin American rhythms, the album includes collaborations with Giorgia, Tony Esposito, and Alfredo Paixão. In April 2007, the tour "Il mio nome è Pino Daniele e suono qui" began in Palermo, traveling throughout Italy with a stop in Zurich, concluding on May 29, 2007, at the Palalottomatica in Rome in a concert featuring Giorgia and Israeli singer Noa. In 2008, he reunited with old friends Tullio De Piscopo, James Senese, Tony Esposito, Joe Amoruso, and Rino Zurzolo, in a sort of re-foundation of "Neapolitan Power." With this lineup, strengthened by the presence of Chiara Civello and Al Di Meola, he produced a triple CD titled "Ricomincio da 30" and embarked on a new tour, culminating in a triumphant concert on July 8, 2008, in Piazza del Plebiscito with numerous guests: the event was broadcast live on television and later released on DVD in 2013. In 2010, Daniele participated in the Crossroads Guitar Festival organized by Eric Clapton in Chicago, playing with Joe Bonamassa and Robert Randolph. On November 23 of the same year, his twenty-second studio album, "Boogie Boogie Man," was released, featuring duets with artists such as Mina, Franco Battiato, Mario Biondi, and J-Ax.
Today's listening is "Via Medina" from the album "Medina".
